A message from Pam Boulton:
The more than 450 members of the Exchange Leadership Initiative (ELI) are everywhere, doing powerful work. All of them share these traits:
Let us empower those whom we see "lead," encouraging them to acknowledge their impact as change makers, mentors, and role models. Let us intentionally consider diversity and equity. Let us invite our colleagues who may have been marginalized due to systemic inequities. Help us to reach leaders who may not yet recognize this call to action is for them.
"I tend to work with the bottom run of folks that no one wants to work with. Motivate them that they can be a force and advocate for themselves. I am like this in every facet of my life from management, church, children's organizations, local, state, and national levels. I am the result of a generation who saw a need and worked to fulfill the need."

Thanks for sharing your story and persisting through many challenges! It's not easy to help parents understand the value of play. I'm sorry your wonderful program had to close, but I'm sure the impact lives on through the children and families you served!

I am not sure whether 'we' had been able to make any impact, but we initiated a program titled 'Home based early learning opportunity' (HBELO) in the year 1999 in a remote village in Bangladesh (Kunda, Nasirnagar, Brahmanbaria), under ECD Unit, a joint venture of Save the Children USA and Plan International Bangladesh.
At the beginning mothers were very happy to know that 'school' is being opened for their kids. But when they found that the children had been engaged in 'playing' only; no reading and writing was there, they just became furious, dragged out their children and shouted at us, "Have you come here to ruin our children?" as they believed playing is a waste of time and doesn't help children in their learning.
After several attempts of motivational activities and discussions they realized their mistake and allowed us to continue the HBELO centers. Finally, it happened we could not allow any more children as we maintained only 30 children per center. The area was under Save the USA and the organization left the area in 2007. And that was the end of a beautiful journey! I left Save the Children USA in 2010.
