As we begin the new year, I invite us all to reflect on key influences in our field. We're curious to know who and what has shaped your practice, including those longstanding people, perspectives, and experiences that remain foundational, powerful, and inspiring over time, as well as newer influences that have led you to rethink what you do and how you do it. My hope is to both honor our heritage and open ourselves to a broader range of voices.

Right? This list starts from a very restricted cultural and regional perspective, and I should perhaps have highlighted that more clearly in the message. That said, even within this narrow range I was struck by the range of ways we can express ourselves through voice and music. Francis, your additions to the list are great. Thanks for shaping my playlist!

(This is for the piece on the top 200 singers). What about Paul Robeson, Kathleen Battle, Katheen Ferrier, Roland Hays, Marion Anderson, Maria Callas, Leontyne Price, Jesse Norman, Denyce Graves.......? Ops - I guess they only want "popular singers". But why do they not say so? And "popular" to whom??? I listen to classical music (there's diversity!)
