"Schools are being forced to focus on what's tested versus what's important, and the civic soul of public education is being further eroded. To remedy this, education must include a very serious civic component . . . one that promotes adhering to a set of civic-minded values and acting upon those values . . . one that doesn't just teach 'civics,' but strives to develop engaged citizens."

MOM AS CEO
In a recent survey reported in the July 2003 issue of Work &
Family Life ([email protected]),
a large majority of working American adults expressed the opinion that their
own mothers could perform as well as or better than their bosses in certain
areas of leadership . . .
Of 632 employees polled by Management Recruiters International of Cleveland,
* 67% said their mothers would do a better job at resolving employee
disputes;
* Nearly 75% said their moms would communicate with their employees at
least as well as their bosses do;
* 70% said their mothers would help provide the same balance, or better
balance, between work and home life for employees;
* 62% said their mothers would handle company finances better than or as well
as their current bosses; and,
* 80% rated their mothers' ethics as stronger than or about the same as
those of their companies' chief executives.
