Earthquakes and Oil Spills
August 4, 2010
At this crucial time in our lives, when everything is so desperate, when every day is a matter of survival, I don't think you can help but be involved.
-Nina Simone, American musician, 1933-2003
The earthquake in Haiti and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have placed great strains on families impacted by these disasters.  In both of these crises early childhood professionals from around the world have been stepping forward to help in any way they can.  Now we have an opportunity to provide continuing support.  In October, Nature Action Teams from 30 nations will be coming to the Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska to secure tools and training for launching campaigns to connect 3 million children with nature.  Two new teams have just been organized in Haiti and Louisiana.
  • In Haiti, World Forum National Representative Caroline Hudicourt has organized a Nature Action Team including school owners, landscape designers, and environmentalists who have been actively involved in reforestation and reforestation training initiatives.
  • In Louisiana, faculty members from the schools of Renewable Resources and Child and Family Studies at University of Louisiana at Lafayette are coming together to create a multidisciplinary service-learning course that will have students working with children and families to assist restoration of the flora and fauna of the coastal regions.

The World Forum Foundation is appealing for donations to support the work of these two Nature Action Teams.  Every dollar that is contributed will be matched by a two additional dollars by Bright Horizons Family Solutions and Danya International, Inc.  You can make your contribution online on the World Forum Foundation website or by sending a check payable to World Forum Foundation to:

I am interested to work for young children and contribute me as volunteer in natural and environmental disaster impacted areas. If I get scope to contribute for them that will make me more happy. Though, I am always trying to contribute for young children. But, I always prefer the deprived. Children of my country also deprived and affected by natural and environmental disaster. Everybody should work for children affected by natural and environmental disaster wherever they live.

There is another way to help with the more immediate impacts of environmental and other disasters, tailored to the skills and compassion found in early childhood professionals. That is voluntary but no cost service with Children's Disaster Services (CDS), a non-sectarian mission of the Church of the Brethren, www.childrensdisasterservices.org. CDS sends teams of trained volunteers for periods of up to two weeks to Red Cross and FEMA shelters and service centers at US sites of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and other natural and man-made disasters. Particularly for those of us who are retired, this service is both vital and rewarding.
