If our heart were large enough to love life in all its detail, we would see that every instant is at once a giver and a plunderer.
-Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962), French philosopher
The
ExchangeEveryDay for October 13 pointed out that in 24 countries, the practice of corporal punishment is banned, but that in the U.S.A. there is not support for such a ban. In fact the passionate, and diverse, messages in response to this issue of ExchangeEveryDay illustrates this lack of consensus.
We invite readers to share their views on corporal punishment in this week's
Exchange Insta-Poll. In this survey we define corporal punishments as “the use of physical force with the intention of causing a child to experience pain, but not injury, for the purpose of correction or control of the child’s behavior.”
Exchange is proud to offer a video product,
Facing the Challenge, that provides insights from experts in the field on why children engage in challenging behaviors and what teachers can do when such behaviors occur in their classrooms.
Facing the Challenge is an instructional, interactive DVD designed to help teachers learn how to prevent children’s use of difficult behaviors and develop intervention strategies to work with children who use challenging behaviors to meet their needs. Check out a video sample. The product has two DVDs with the following content:
- What is Challenging Behavior?
- Developmentally Appropriate Behavior
- Why do Kids Misbehave?
- Parents as Partners
- Skill Development Study #1
- Prevention Strategies
- Behavioral Planning I
- Behavioral Planning II
- Intervention Strategies
- Skill Development Study #2

I do not believe in spanking because it can only hurt the child, the child will never learn standards, values, and respect from getting hit all the time when something goes wrong. Kids or adults should never use voilence.

I was raised on corporal punishment so I do believe in it. It is the parents choice if they want to carry on with the punishment.

Corporal punishment by adults towards children is the ultimate demonstration of powerlessness. In our childcare centres it's forbidden. A Dutch reverend promoting corporal punishment by parents referring to: "Who loves his children castigates them" will be prosecuted.

No corporal punishment should be allowed in schools, child care homes or centers! With parents, I think it's a choice. A bad choice.

I am from the old school. I don't think corporal punishment should be banished. I think what parents do with their children is their own business as long as it's in perspective.
