Nearly 200 students and teachers have responded to the
Exchange survey on online learning. A quick review of these first responses reveals that three out of four students who have experienced online learning prefer it to traditional classroom learning. They cited these "positives" about their online experience:
- Flexibility — can keep my job; can work on my own schedule
- Can learn from anywhere — no driving, no parking
- Rich interactions — with professor and with students from all over
They cited these "negatives" with their online experience:
- Group work hassles — teammates not doing their part in assignments and discussions
- Too much freedom — you need to have a high degree of self discipline to make this work
- Miss the face-to-face interactions with students and professor
- Too much chit chat in discussions

I am an online student with the University of Cincinnati and I have for the most part enjoyed the experience. I am a second time around student having received my BA in management many years ago. I choose online because of the flexibility and the interaction of the different students that are in my classes. I did not need or want the college campus experience at this stage of my life and wanted the expertise of the professors and the prestige of the University. I would recommend the ECLC program to anyone in early childhood. I do find that some of the professors, I think, forget that most online students are not full time students and give assignments that would be ok for an on campus student or full time student. My life is very full and it is sometimes very difficult to get assignments done due to the volume.

While I'd love to complete my graduate work online, the issues with group dicussions and team members not doing their share of work, and waiting till the last minute to complete projects--is too stressful. I continue to hear this from peers that are trying to complete online degrees.
In addition, I understand that to meet accred; educational organizations must incorporate the team-group-discussions into the package. However, I just want a program that will just let me do my work, that offers the same classes all the time so that I can complete the degree when I want to. Not while I'm waiting for someone else to complete their work.
