Are Child Care Fees Declining?
March 12, 2008
It's a relief to hear the rain. It's the sound of billions of drops, all equal, all equally committed to falling, like a sudden outbreak of democracy.
-Alice Oswald
For over a decade Exchange has surveyed fees for early childhood services in North America. The preliminary results from the 2008 survey indicate that fees are rising, but quite possibly at a slower rate than inflation " meaning that fees may actually be slipping backwards. However, we still need many more of you to share your current fees in order to give our results stronger validity. For example, we do not have enough participants from 9 states (Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia) in order to display complete results for those states. Share your data today " confidentially " and view the updated results at www.ChildCareExchange.com.

I learned many years ago to stop apoligizing for the high cost of quality early care and education and I don't! I believe that as an industry we realigned our rates with "reality" several years ago and have now reached a point where we can control costs, include a profit... even if a small one and no longer require high annual increases.

I have submitted our fees, but they are simply for our center which is heavily subsidized by our company and yet still are more than what you have recorded here. I think that these fees look very low in comparison to the market surveys that we have done around the country when pricing our subsidized fees.

The child care fees are not what we should get paid for the services of including food and curriculum for the children. My parents laughed in my face when I informed them in regards to a meal charge per week. We can afford to pay our parent fees and you are going to charge for food. It cost me an average of $300.00 for child care food and curriculum cost 25.00 per month for each child with supplies. The counties/states need to raise our fees and pay us on time each month for our subsized children. instead of the middle of the month wehn all bills and food items are past due.

Tution will rise slower than previous years due to the state of the economy. For profit centers have a harder time raising tution because we cannot price ourselves out of the market.
