"The largest portion of this market is private center-based child care. This year 5.4 million children will attend center-based care and account for $42 billion or 76 percent of the market. The remaining market size is comprised of Head Start ($6.7 billion) and public and private school-based pre-k ($6.4 billion)."
In analyzing the increasing role of state pre-k programs, Wilson notes...
"The number of schools with pre-k has increased steadily, growing from 27,000 in 2000 to 40,000 in 2008 �" a 48 percent increase. Like Head Start, these programs mainly serve four year olds.... School systems are also outsourcing their pre-k programs to private centers. The number of private child care centers receiving public pre-k funding has increased from 5,131 to 6,268 (22 percent) in the past year."

I am very concerned that the teacher-child ratios are way out of whack! I know what the tate minimums and maximums are, However, they still seem out of whack to me. A 1-11 ratio for toddlers is really stretching a caregiver to the limit. Plus, this age child can get into a lot of mischief in just a matter of seconds. Just let that child get bit or injured and the caregiver is in serious trouble from the parents. Whoever makes the standards should be made to have first-hand knowledge of being in a child care environment and see for themselves how dangerous some of the ratios are.

• Lays the groundwork for Los Angeles County’s future economic success by preparing the next generation for effective participation in the economy and attracting business to Los Angeles County.
