What Do Staffs Want? Building Relationships
March 13, 2007
The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.
-William Arthur Ward

Terry Bacon interviewed and talked with over 500 business and industry employees and management personnel about what they want in a work environment as it relates to effective “boss/employee connections.” As a result of this effort key areas came out that focus on effective management-employee relationships.

Here are the major focus points:

  • trust (trusting our staffs to be effective at their jobs)
  • challenge (our employees feeling they can meet the challenges of their positions!)
  • self-worth (feeling good about themselves and their roles and responsibilities)
  • competence (feeling good about their work)
  • appreciation (being recognized for their efforts, energies, accomplishments)
  • excitement (feeling the excitement of their work, their efforts, their energies in supporting the development of young children and their families)
  • This is a great resource in exploring what employees are looking for from their bosses! (A great question to discuss at staff meetings.)

“What People Want: A Managers Guide For Building Relationships That Work by Terry R. Bacon, Davies-Black Publishing. Take a look " a good book!

As a human resource manager, this article has been an eye opener. While we think that what motivates staff are tangible things like salary increment, allowances and many others like these. I have learnt a new approach hence I would appreciate more of these career building articles especially in the area of human resource management.
