Friendship is like a prism through which the many variations of beauty are revealed in our lives.

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in an article in Rethinking Schools (Summer 2006; www.rethinkingschools.org) observed that 17.1 percent of children were overweight in 2004, compared with 13.9 percent in 2000. They reported that even the youngest children weren't immune to this trend. In children between 2 and 5 years old, 13.9 percent were overweight in 2004 compared with 10.3 percent in 2000.

At Moorestown Children's School, nutrition is only part of the issue. We talk about and practice good nutrition and portion awareness. We do not allow "kid-targeted" commercial foods in the school, and all foods from home must meet our nutritional guidelines.

Our classes go on long nature walks more than once a week, and play on wide open acres. We adjust our outside time for the weather conditions, but still go outside many times a day, in all but dangerous weather. Children who attend a full day spend three to five active hours outdoors. Weekly classes in dance, karate and theatical movement augment our outdoor walks and playtimes.

This is a very serious problem that perhaps Childcare Exchange could consider addressing more aggressively--perhaps a "working forum".

We address it in our center focusing on nutrition in the classrooms, cooking nutritious foods with the children, and gardening. But we are just one--I hope other centers take on this challenge of education our young children and their parents and continue to put pressure on the fast food industry.

We can make a difference if we all work together!

Thank you for the statistics ChildCare Excahnge.

I just wanted to comment that the right margin is slightly cutting off some of the article.

I really enjoy getting exchange everyday and sharing them with my staff.
