Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in an article in Rethinking Schools (Summer 2006; www.rethinkingschools.org) observed that 17.1 percent of children were overweight in 2004, compared with 13.9 percent in 2000. They reported that even the youngest children weren't immune to this trend. In children between 2 and 5 years old, 13.9 percent were overweight in 2004 compared with 10.3 percent in 2000.
