"We cannot solve
the problems that do exist if we're distracted by problems that don't exist.
Claiming that the system is failing is not only distracting, but creates the
wrong climate for improvement--you don't get people to do better by telling
them how lousy they are." - Gerald W. Bracey
Music Fosters Math Skills
In their Beginnings Workshop article in the July 2004 issue of
Exchange, "Music and Math: How Do We Make the Connection
for Preschoolers?" Karen Sawyers and Janet Hutson-Brandhagen, observe...
"Music is organized in mathematical ways: its melodies, rhythms, and harmonies
are built on recurring mathematical patterns and sequences. To children, music
is play in every sense of the word. In addition, early experiences with music
that are successful and fun prepare children to be successful in other areas
of learning, particularly math in their own way and in their own time. It's
important to keep this principle in mind as we set up our classrooms and plan
for music activities in the daily routine."
In the article the authors cite research demonstrating the impact of music on
the development of reasoning skills instrumental in math problem solving, and
provide ideas on how teachers can integrate music and math in their classrooms.
