All of us at Exchange Press would like to thank Jean Dugan for twenty years of "Reading Matters" in Exchange magazine! There’s no better way than to share Exchange Press co-founder Bonnie Neugebauer’s words of gratitude from the most recent issue:
One of my favorite photos of my dear friend and sister is this one of Jean reading ¿Do?nde esta? Spot? by Eric Hill to a group of children in the Dominican Republic. At the time she was just learning Spanish, so her pronunciation may not have been perfect; but her love of reading no doubt created a connection between Jean and the children, between the children and the playfulness of the story, and among the children who shared this experience together.
Jean has enjoyed books her entire life, and with wisdom and delight she has shared this love of stories with friends and family, with children and adults who consulted her as a librarian, and with all of us as Exchange readers. She believes in the power of stories to help us see the world in new ways.
For "Reading Matters" Jean has researched and read hundreds of books written for children. She has analyzed the messages embedded in the words and in the illustrations, to ensure that the books she recommends work for young readers and listeners and convey the values she believes in.
Jean Dugan has shared so much of herself through "Reading Matters." She has changed us and empowered us through her gifts. Our hearts fill with gratitude.
THANKS from your entire Exchange Press Family, Jean!
