Cooking with Preschoolers
In the Exchange publication, The Wonder of It: Exploring
How the World Works, Bonnie Neugebauer offers these points to keep in
mind in her chapter, "Cooking with Preschoolers (or Julia Child Had to
Start Somewhere)"...
1. The child will be only able to focus on one step at a time.
2. Each ingredient should be wonderful to explore.
3. The recipe must be flexible to allow for inaccurate counting and measuring.
4. There must be potential for experimentation and growth -- there should
be a recipe with both pictures and print.
5. A routine must be established which will be followed throughout the
year.
6. The recipe must involve action. Each child must be able to act.
There must be sufficient ingredients and utensils.
7. Because the child is unable to follow the transformation process, there
should be no baking involved.
