Get smarter every day by listening to your intuition,
looking at the world with the eye of your forehead.
Jump, dance, sing, so that you live happier.
Heal yourself, with beautiful love,
and always remember… you are the medicine.
-Maria Sabina, Mazatec Poet,1894-1985
Caring: A Feminine Approach to Ethics & Moral Education (1984); Women and Evil (1989); The Challenge to Care in Schools: An Alternative Approach to Education (1992); Philosophy of Education(1995); Educating for Intelligent Belief or Unbelief (2000); Happiness and Education (2003); When School Reform Goes Wrong (2007); Peace Education: How We Come to Love and Hate War (2011); Teaching Controversial Issues: The Case for Critical Thinking and Moral Commitment in the Classroom (2016).
These titles and many more were penned by education philosopher Nel Noddings, who passed away in August at age 93. Noddings, a professor of education at Stanford University, left an indelible mark on the field. In the November 2020 article "Meeting Nel Noddings," Lynnette Haley O’Stewart and Carol Garboden Murray share a visit with Noddings in her home, which they describe as "a nest of care." They remarked, "Sitting with Nel, we experienced the art of conversation—the ebb and flow of talking and listening that is central in relationship building."
Discussing the unification of care and education, Noddings told them, "You can explain that you are not just emphasizing care because you are working with little kids, but because care is a relational model for learning, because it applies to the whole life span, and is central to human development."
