Rachel Robertson, in a piece included in the Exchange Essentials article collection, Language Development, writes:
"Literacy development has become a primary focus in education. Much attention has been given to statistics illustrating American children's lack of achievement in this important learning domain. In an effort to increase achievement and encourage competence and success, reading initiatives have blossomed throughout the country. While this is commendable and necessary, it is also important to look at the other areas of literacy development — speaking, listening, and writing — to ensure complete development."
.
In her book, A Young Writer’s World, Rebecca Giles provides a wealth of resources to help children develop a love for writing. She explains,
"As children explore the wonders of the written word, imitating the writers around them, they begin to realize that developing one’s ideas on paper by composing sentences is a rewarding process. With plenty of time and rich experiences that allow children to incorporate writing into their play, they can successfully navigate the journey to become confident and creative authors."

I also think that it is valuable to think, too, about the spoken story...and oral storytelling opportunities....there are so many compelling components to language development.
