International Stonework Play Day is a wonderful worldwide celebration where nature, creativity, story and humankind connect.
In 2021 it will be celebrated on (or around) Friday, November 3rd. Register here for a free guidebook
Working with stones is just one example of "loose parts play," originally extolled by architect Simon Nicholson in his Theory of Loose Parts. Rusty Keeler’s popular book, Adventures in Risky Play reminds us that nature provides an amazing variety of loose parts -- from stones to leaves to sticks, pine cones, seeds pods and much more. Keeler writes that, "loose parts let children control their play and build what they want to build. It’s not for us to determine the outcome…You can predict that children will use the stuff, but you can never fully predict how. The beauty of playful surprise!"

We’ve had two Stonework Play Workshops for adults at the Institute’s studio at the summit. People’s backgrounds suited to the lessons learned and the magic that happens were eclectic: from art teachers, opera singer, a CEO, child therapist, writers, community and event organizers, even John Weidman our cofounder and art director. Everyone surprised how the system works even if you’re afraid to jump off the cliff and just let things happen…at the end we enjoyed each other’s stories and the melding of the group…. Very impactful…!!!!!??
