Carol Garboden Murray, in her popular new book, Illuminating Care: The Pedagogy and Practice of Care in Early Childhood Communities, urges all of us in the early childhood field to recognize that care is equally as important as education. In fact, Garboden Murray asserts that care IS education.
So, what do you do (or what do you plan to do) to help early childhood practitioners recognize that providing care is noble and vital?

I don't work in the classroom; I teach and write. But for me we need a paradigm shift- away from focusing on gains in specific academic and cognitive areas, and toward focusing on the emotional component of group care. We need to focus more on Erikson's stages, and on placing care and emotional security before other areas of the classroom.This is particularly true for children who struggle in the program, for whatever reasons.

As the Early Childhood Special Education classroom teacher in Gretna, I always told the children that Marcia had one Classroom Rule--only ONE--Be Kind To Each Other!! They knew it and did they ever do it!!
