Exciting New Book, Illuminating Care
April 28, 2021
The quality of life is in proportion, always, to the capacity for delight. The capacity for delight is the gift of paying attention.
-May Sarton, 1912 – 1995
In her beautiful and much-anticipated book, Illuminating Care: The Pedagogy and Practice of Care in Early Childhood Communities, Carol Garboden Murray writes:

"As an early childhood teacher are you sometimes surprised by the amount of time you spend in caring rituals? Do you ever feel that the snack to prepare, the hands to wash, or the nose to wipe is getting in the way of teaching? What if we adopted a new way of thinking about care and incorporated it into the heart of our pedagogy? What would our practice look like if we lifted up the daily chores of caring as honorable rituals and essential educational practices?"

Garboden Murray explains that her goal is "to elevate care from the inside out, starting with the people who care for the youngest citizens...The mission is to name care as an art and science and demonstrate care as a strength and superpower."

It is wonderful to see a book dedicated to this critical topic! Our most important task in working with young children is the care and attention to their basic physical and psychological needs - everything else comes second. Further, we must celebrate - and support - with adequate pay and benefits - those who care for our youngest and most vulnerable people!
