Nick Terrones has written a wonderful new book called A Can of Worms: Fearless Conversations with Toddlers (now available for pre-order). Edited by Ann Pelo and Margie Carter, this is the newest offering in the Reimaging Our Work series.
Nick writes: “I am often asked why I’ve continued to work with toddlers for over a decade. My answer is simple: toddlers remind me that life is fun, filled with more wonder than certainty, and abundant with explorations and discoveries both external and internal.”
Nick’s explorations of what it means to work authentically with toddlers, including ways to tackle the big questions about life that they are exploring, provides an inspiring example to anyone who works with or for young children.

Toddlers ask big, bold questions every day. Teachers and caregivers give shape to the world as they respond to those questions. The conversation unfolds in an electric moment—an awkward, exciting, bewildering moment. A Can of Worms is a guide and support for celebrating these most important conversations. Have no fear! Take a deep breath, and respond. |

Talking with toddlers is so important as A Can of Worms illustrates. Conversation is important to hear what children think, to give them a bigger vocabulary so they can be understood and so they can understand what they read. Some parents have a hard time getting started. The Gift of Words: How Do Children Learn to Talk? has 12 illustrated conversation starters to help parents and toddlers begin. I recommend both books.
