The third video in the complimentary series “From Surviving to Thriving,” (provided as a gift to you from Exchange Press, Hinge Brokers and Video Active Productions), is available today at www.exchangepress.com/surviving-to-thriving
Video three, “Teachers Demonstrating Resilience, Commitment and Heart” outlines challenges teachers are facing during the pandemic and provides inspiring examples of how educators and administrators are rising to meet those challenges in remarkable ways. Again, expert voices from the field provide encouragement and support, as well as ideas for nurturing teachers and supporting their wellness.
Another resource we hope will offer ideas for strengthening leadership at this crucial time is Art of Leadership: Leading Early Childhood Programs. Following is an excerpt written by Debra R. Sullivan, who also appears in the video series. Her advice on ways to share leadership is even more important today than when she originally wrote the article. In a time like now where administrators face continual change and uncertainty, sharing leadership tasks will not only alleviate some of the burden, but will also provide staff with a sense that they are valued and can make a needed contribution (very important during a time when it’s easy to feel helpless).
“Leadership can emerge anywhere. Keep your eyes open! Provide opportunities for people to practice leadership. Don’t be in charge of everything…hone your own ability to be a good follower. Expect leadership from every member of your staff. People often rise to the level that is expected of them…
Learn about everyone’s unique gifts, strengths and contributions and find a place for these in the leadership process. If you don’t know, find out. Remember that responsibility must come with a big dose of leadership. To have responsibility without the ability to influence process or product is just more work.”
