In his well-loved book, Caring Spaces, Jim Greenman quoted Kenneth Eble, author of A Perfect Education: “A child is privileged, I think, to have different people moving in and out of the family circle: different in ages, occupations, places of residence, temperament, even in morality.” Greenman goes on to explain: “It is through people that children become fully human members of society and discover how the social world works and their place in it…The diversity of people both enriches childhood and prepares children for a widening world.”

My favorite memories growing up on a farm in the broader country between England and Wales are of all the interesting people I interacted with. There was Tommy Paul, the Shepard, Alf Withers, who cared for the chickens, and Harry Fossard, whose sweet smelling carpentry shop enthralled me! I also loved all the adults who cared for us after school hours, in what the Germans call Hort. Yes, human interaction at this age is more important than the curriculum and specific skill acquisition!
