In the new book, Cup, authors Bridgette Towle and Angela Heape describe a new discovery they made with a child’s help during a time when their entire group of children engaged in inspiring and complex work focused on exploring cups:
"One day an unexpected event led to new wonder and discovery. Ira arrived and all of the cups were being used by other children. This seemed like an opportune time to invite Ira to create a plan: a ‘design map’ for his building while he waited his turn. The intertwined process of thinking and drawing can be a powerful generator of ideas and a chance to make visible working theories…
Using black pen on paper Ira completed a beautiful diagram of intricate lines. 'It's a big airplane which transforms into a big castle when it lands.'
We hung Ira's plan on the studio wall and he constantly referred to it as he assembled the cups."
