Our Fundamental Need for Beauty
June 13, 2018
I have challenged myself that I will read thousands of books and I will empower myself with knowledge. Pens and books are the weapons that defeat terrorism.
-Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani female education activist

“Beauty, it has been said, is one of the most profound and essential forces in our lives,” writes Ruth Wilson in an Exchange article, “Beauty in the Lives of Young Children,” that is the focus of an Out of the Box Training Kit by the same name.

While Wilson writes of the profound need children have to experience beauty regularly, she also acknowledges that this is equally true for adults. She writes: “More recent work by Howard Garner – who is best known for his theory of multiple intelligences…addresses the question, ‘Why concern ourselves with beauty?’ His answer includes the idea that beauty is fundamental to our condition as human beings and that the pursuit of the beautiful constitutes a crucial part of life. Gardner defines beauty as something that’s interesting, that has a memorable form, and that invites revisiting. And, as a bonus, Gardner says that beauty often gives us a ‘tingle.’”

An interesting aspect of teaching or pointing out all the beauty inside a room and outside with the natural scenery to a young child. Also accenting the beauty of many things, brings a positive feeling to the mind.
