Gigi Schweikert, writing in the book, Engaging Families in Early Childhood Organizations, tells the following story:
"It's hard to love every child and even more difficult to love their parents. With the hurried lives of some parents, we often wonder, 'Why did they have children anyway?' I knew a parent who took a sales job and hardly saw his children. The wife was like a single mother. The father was always working and spent little time with his children. It was easy for me to judge his parenting as uncaring. I found out later that that dad grew up very poor and was determined to give his children a college education. That dad was my dad and all three of us, his children, finished college."
Schweikert goes on to assert that "if we really want to value parents, to form an alliance, we have to understand who they are."
