Motivated to Move
February 11, 2016
It always seems impossible until it’s done.
-Nelson Mandela

Getting children moving begins with teachers being committed to moving. This is the message of the last segment in Lesson Three of the Exchange training DVD, Preventing Obesity and Promoting Wellness in Early Childhood Settings. In the segment, Steve Gross, founder of Life Is Good Playmakers, observes, "If I really want children to be more comfortable using their bodies and moving, I need to be more comfortable using my body and moving...It begins with us making a commitment to move."

While I agree that it is important for teachers to be physically active, I deeply believe that this must start at the top of the program, with its philosophy and leadership. Is there time in the day devoted to physical activity? Are there adequate indoor and outdoor spaces and enough good equipment? And is there in-service training devoted to this topic? If the program focuses on it it will happen; if not, it will simply be an add-on.
