Here are some of my favorite insights from Martin Luther King, Jr. that apply to our work as early childhood leaders:
"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."
"All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence."
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
"A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus."

I was in an audience listening to Dr. King in Dallas, TX, 2 months before he was murdered in Memphis. Someone asked him -"Dr. King, you've had so many death threats, why do you keep on?" His short answer: "I don't want my death at 78 to be the belated anouncement of my earlier demise at 38.
