Good News for Children of the World
December 31, 2015
The secret to seeing children is to understand that most seemingly ordinary events have great significance if you stop to notice and study them.
-Deb Curtis, Really Seeing Children

At the 2014 World Forum on Early Care and Education in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Pia Britto, Chief of UNICEF's Early Childhood Development Section, challenged the 850 delegates from 70+ countries to advocate actively to have early childhood education included in the new agenda of the United Nations.  Recently, Pia notified us of the good news that two indicators are likely to be included in the new Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations:

4.2.1: Percentage of children, under 5 years of age, who are developmentally on track in health, learning, and psychosocial well-being

4.2.2: Participation rate in organized learning (1 year before official primary entry age) for all countries

Pia concluded: "This is a historic moment for young children, because no more can the world hide from facing the situation of their development.  Gone is the era of proxy indicators and the myth that child development cannot be measured at a population level.  Now we will be able to track real change in young child outcomes beyond access, for all children.  Congratulations to the community in accomplishing this mammoth task.  A huge debt of gratitude to each of you for the role you have played in making this dream a reality."

I too applaud this achievement and welcome the change of thinking that will come along with it. You have our support here in Canada. Thanks for all the hard work that went into making this a reality. BRAVO!
