Emotions in Fundraising
September 14, 2015
Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not.
-Oprah Winfrey

"Whether you work in a program in which young children are enrolled or in an agency that offers services to those who work with young children, the key to raising money is to keep the request focused on the children," writes Roberta Bergman in Not Just Small Change: Fund Development for Early Childhood Programs.

"Focusing the request on the children is more likely to create an emotional connection on the part of the donor, an important element in fundraising.  An emotional connection is easiest to achieve in appeals to individuals, through the use of anecdotes or case examples.  It's more difficult to accomplish in government grant applications, which require measurable outcomes linked to needs assessments, program design, evaluation processes, and proposed budgets.  However, it's not impossible for these applications to evoke thoughts of little children with big needs."
