Relationships Matter
July 16, 2015
Instead of standing on the shore and proving to ourselves that the ocean cannot carry us, let us venture on its waters just to see.
-Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

"Relationships are the 'active ingredients' in healthy human development," observe Nefertiti Bruce and Karen Cairone in Socially Strong, Emotionally Secure: 50 Activities to Promote Resilience in Young Children.

"...Supportive interactions are the basis for relationship-building, and relationships are the foundation for the warm and caring bonds that help both children and adults feel safe. Young children experience the world as an environment of relationships, and these relationships affect about every aspect of development - cognitive, social, emotional and physical.

"Carrying out supportive interaction strategies is not difficult, but it must become intentional. Intentional strategies are thought out and planned in advance, helping adults be more prepared for and mindful of their efforts to prevent challenging behaviors and promote healthy social and emotional development. When we are not intentional in our planning, our activities can seem forced, rushed, and lacking in meaning and purpose."

Now more than ever, adults must help children develop the skills necessary to navigate through life successfully. By focusing on building social and emotional strength, we increase children's resilience and prepare them to handle the challenges in life. The strategies and activities in Socially Strong, Emotionally Secure: 50 Activities to Promote Resilience in Young Children help children become socially and emotionally healthy for life. Organized into five chapters, the activities support and build resilience in children ages 3 to 8.

What about children's intentionality? What about what is purposeful and meaningful to the child?

Yes, we need to always to cognizant of how the physical and social environment can support relationships, but we have to be mindful that relationships are two-way - one being that of the child.

I go in with plans in my head, but I know that most of my day will be spent talking with the children about what they want to talk about (and that's not the same for everyone). One wants to talk about 'Mixels' and Thomas the train, another loves Elsa, and one little boy just wants to talk about his mom. Children need real dialogue with teachers who care about what that child has to say. This creates a true relationship between child and teacher and learning naturally takes place. We spend so much time making this harder than it should be.
