Dual Language Activities
July 9, 2015
Even on your worst day in the classroom, you are still some child’s best hope.
-Larry Bell, educational consultant

In her book, Many Languages, One Classroom, Karen Nemeth provides ideas for preschool classroom activities that are welcoming to children with all linguistic backgrounds.  Here are a few of her ideas:

  • Develop a welcome routine that helps DLL [dual language learners] children get involved in an activity as soon as they come in and to ensure that they are not overlooked.  Some teachers make sure that a small variety of calm and easy activities are set out when children arrive such as a limited selection of table toys, puzzles, small blocks, or books.
  • When children arrive, make a special effort to greet each one warmly using their home language and an appropriate greeting.  Ask the children's family members... to help with this.
  • A daily schedule is an important part of a high-quality preschool program, and the comforting predictability of the schedule seems to be even more important for the dual language learners.

Many Languages, One Classroom

In classrooms across the country, teachers are encountering more children who are learning English, come from diverse backgrounds, and who speak a variety of languages.  As challenging as this may be, a preschool teacher's goal remains the same: to welcome all children and give them the best possible start in education and in life.  Even the most experienced teacher can feel a bit unsure about meeting the unique needs of children from different language backgrounds.  Many Languages, One Classroom applies the latest information about best practices to all aspects of a preschool program. From using lists of keywords and visual aids to using body language and gestures, the strategies you will find in this book are adaptable and easy to put into practice.  Designed to fit any preschool curriculum, Many Languages, One Classroom addresses state standards and benchmarks of standard quality programming.

Thank you for posting about my book, Many Languages, One Classroom. Did you know that MOST early childhood groups in the U.S. have at least one child who has a language other than English at home? I will love to hear reader ideas and questions! I also have a book from Gryphon House called Many Languages, Building Connections: Supporting Infants and Toddlers who are Dual Language Learners.
