Hedge Funders vs. Kindergarten Teachers
May 19, 2015
The goal of early childhood education should be to activate the child's own natural desire to learn.
-Maria Montessori

"The top 25 hedge fund managers make more than all kindergarten teachers in the country," stated President Obama in a speech on poverty at Georgetown University on May 12. The Washington Post decided to fact check this and here is what they found:

"...An annual ranking of top hedge fund managers found that the 25 most successful pulled in $11.62 billion in 2014 [in what analysts point out was the worst year for them since the stock market meltdown in 2008.]

"[According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics] in 2012 the nation had about 158,000 kindergarten teachers.... The average salary was $53,480 [which works out to a total of $8.45 billion.]

Sadly I don't think we will ever put caring for children on the same pedestal that we place sports/music/Hollywood celebrities. It is sad that as a society we just don't value raising children. Perhaps someday, we will once again value the idea of the stay-at-home parent.

I'm MUCH more concerned about what the "education reformers" are making. From our tax dollars that are earmarked for education!
It has been reported that Pearson is set to make billions in the next three years. A charter school operator in NY made over $500,000 last year. What do his teachers make? These are just two examples.
This is what Obama should be talking about! Then again, he and his Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, are responsible. So…
I am a kindergarten teacher and I am not so concerned about what I make. I am concerned about the for-profit corporate takeover of public schools. It is a scam.

What we value we will pay for and in our society we value sports figures, entertainers and corporate investors. We need to value children and their needs and education.

"The measure of a society is its reverence for children." Gesell
