Praise from a Head Start Kid
April 13, 2015
It takes a long time to become young.
-Pablo Picasso

Last week at the 42nd Annual Head Start Conference in Washington, DC, a self-proclaimed "Head Start kid" gave tribute to the organization she credits for inspiring her love of learning. The name of that kid? Sylvia Mathews Burwell, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

In a speech commemorating Head Start's 50th anniversary, Burwell reminisced about watching chicks hatch when she was in preschool and praised the program as "crucial to fighting poverty and building up our next generation." Burwell called on Congress to enact President Barack Obama's budget, which requests more than $10 billion for Head Start, a $1.5 billion increase over this year's budget. "Head Start does not need to be a partisan issue," she said.

As a Head Start parent times three daughters, sponsored by Head Start and other agencies through a college degree program and teaching the philosophy of the program in now my home based program I am a true believer in this early education program because starting out as a volunteer to becoming my own business owner I can't say enough supportive things about this program. Let's see another 50 years of early learning programs.

I gotta tell ya, after working in the early childhood field for 30yrs, I have to be honest. The High/Scope curriculum is probably the best developmentally appropriate method out there for young children. The challenge with it is that staff need to be trained developmentally appropriately, the parents also need to be introduced to the curriculum in a hands-on fashion, with their children, and ongoing observation/feedback by trainers with teachers is necessary for growth and learning among the staff members. The C.O.R. High/Scope Assessment tool is the best quality around, and the staff also needs training in that, to make that effective to monitor children's learning.🌺
