Teaching Babies to Read
March 11, 2015
Acknowledging the good that you already have in life is the foundation for all abundance.
-Eckhart Tollle

In the Beginnings Workshop section of the just published March/April 2015 issue of Exchange, Bisa Batten Lewis describes in detail six reasons why teaching babies to read is NOT good practice in her article "'I Want My Baby to Read': Supporting Parents in Guiding Early Language and Literacy Development":

  • It's not developmentally appropriate.
  • There is no need to rush.
  • Babies don't read, they memorize.
  • Reading instruction is too formal for babies who learn best through play.
  • Other areas of development suffer.
  • Reading early will not make your baby a genius.

These 16-page workshops are invaluable resources for staff development, addressing a specific early childhood curriculum topic in-depth. 120 titles available for immediate download!

I could not go back to the source or find your reference on this one. I do enjoy reading your material!

I agree that it is a mistake to teach babies and young children to read too early. Once you learn to read, you quickly view the world differently. There is quite a lot to learn about the world that is useful information before seeing it in words.
