We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.

Automatic, across-the-board cuts on Head Start, child care, and early education required by the Budget Control Act of 2011 will total about $1.2 trillion over nine years beginning in 2013, observes the National Women's Law Center in their report, "
Impact of Sequestration Cuts on Head Start, Child Care and Early Education." Here are some examples from the report of the resulting cuts:
Alabama: About $3 million in sequestration cuts threaten the child care assistance of approximately 1,000 families in the state.
South Carolina: The Cincinnati - Hamilton County Community Action Agency will lose $1 million in Head Start funding. As a result, 200 children will be cut from the program and 20 teachers will lose their jobs.
Indiana: Approximately 1,100 children in the state will not receive Head Start and Early Head Start services as a result of the cuts.

When you see the big numbers, the effects of sequestration budget cuts are very worrisome. Sometimes, we have to stop and think about what it all means to each and every family and young child who is suddenly locked out of early care and education! I worked with a children's librarian to create this set of suggestions for ways that libraries can provide early literacy and learning supports where sequestration cuts off so learning can keep going! http://languagecastle.com/wordpress/?p=299 I hope others will add suggestions too!

As a former Head Start teacher, this article saddens me greatly. Has the world not figured out that if we do not help our young children be educated and self-sufficient, we are setting ourselves up for a dismal future? I have seen firsthand what benefits early education have on not only the child but the entire family system. Everyone benefits! Who do we contact that has the ability to get this changed?
