Who is Illiterate?
February 15, 2013
Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together.
-Woodrow Wilson

I ran across a fascinating, book, Shocking Global Facts (London: Fiell Publishing Limited, 2010), which, among many facts, presented these insights on illiteracy:

  • Two-thirds of the world's 785 million illiterate adults are women.
  • Two-thirds of the world's 785 million illiterate adults are found in only eight countries:  India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Egypt.

I have two comments on this article. First, isn't it interesting that India is on this list,. when so many politicians compare American education with Japan and India! How about comparing literacy rates and educational equality (I wonder the quality of education the Untouchables receive)? The second is that these figures used by international organizations are not always accurate. Brazil reports far higher literacy rates than actually exist.
