MORE ON SELF ESTEEM
May 22, 2002

"A lion growls not in a den full of straw but in a den full of meat." -Hebrew proverb

MORE ON SELF ESTEEM

Not surprisingly, we have received large number of responses to the the ExchangeEveryDay for May 16, "Bursting the Self-Esteem Bubble." One of the more interesting responses came from Kirsten Haugen...

"I'm reading the book, The Optimistic Child: A Proven Program to Safeguard Children Against Depression and Build Lifelong Resilience, by Martin Seligman (Harper Perenial, 1995). He counters the notion that kids can be encouraged to feel good about themselves, but rather need the skills and experiences that lead to feeling good about themselves. His observation:

'If we as parents and teachers promote the doing-well side of self-esteem, the feeling-good side, which cannot be taught directly, will follow.'"
