Imaginative Play
June 1, 2011
We could never have loved the earth so well if we had had no childhood in it...
-George Eliot, 1819-1880, The Mill on the Floss
The newest Exchange Out of the Box Training Kit, "Sparking Imagination," is based on Karen Stephen's article, "Imaginative Play During Childhood: Required for Reaching Full Potential."  In this article, Stephens identifies play outcomes that are upheld by research:

  • abstract and symbolic thinking, decision-making, creative problem solving, and goal setting;
  • complex language development and ability to ‘self-talk’ through learning steps;
  • emotional awareness and competence, identity and self-image development, ability to maintain self-control through self-regulation, stress management, and ability to delay gratification;
  • social skills, such as patience, cooperation, negotiation, non-violent conflict resolution, teamwork, sharing, considering other’s point of view; and,
  • formation of a moral or ethical code that distinguishes right from wrong, respect for others’ rights, and ability to work toward the greater good.

Exchangeis excited to announce a new New Out of the Box Training Kit, Sparking Imagination, designed to help Learners understand the importance of imaginative play in children's development and how providing recycled and open-ended materials opens the doors of imagination and promotes executive function in young children.

Out of the Box Kits enable you to run a professional development training class.  Each Kit includes step-by-step instructions to prepare, conduct, and evaluate your training session.  They are also flexible enough to allow you to include your own ideas and exercises to meet any special needs of your staff.

I need to respond to Stephen's article in regard to "abstract and symbolic thinking"...
As educators 0-5 and K-12 we must understand the importance of developing these skills. We know the alphabetic principal is based on an abstract sound/symbol concept. We know or should know the developmental learning stages of abstract/symbolic thought. And we know or should know that imaginative play intentionally supported manifests these two skills. We certainly know the reading process (language/literacy development) is based on the alphabetic principal therefore we know or should know that imaginative play is or should be a part of every educators, 0-5 or K-12 or at the least 0-Third Grade, teaching repertoire. Thank you, Stephen's for "Sparking Imagination".
