Bad Attitude Checklist
April 1, 2011
We’re not waiting five, 10, 20 years to take the action we want to see. We’re not the future of the world, we’re the present, we’re acting now.
-Salvador Gómez-Colón, Youth Activist, Puerto Rico
In her Exchange article, "The Truth About Bad Attitudes,"  (Exchange, March/April 2011), Gigi Schwiekert talks about the impact of a person with a bad attitude and offers this checklist to see if maybe you exhibit some bad attitudes...
  1. I want others to hear my opinion about almost everything.
  2. I don’t listen to some people.
  3. Sometimes I am thinking about what I am going to say next instead of listening to others.
  4. Sometimes I raise my voice or speak more curtly if they don’t hear me or agree with me.
  5. I monopolize the conversations and don’t let others talk.
  6. I have to have the last word.
  7. No one ever sees my point of view.
  8. I like when people tell me I am right.
  9. Sometimes I have to talk to adults like they are children so they will understand.
  10. I am smarter than everyone else.
  11. I’m never wrong.
  12. If I were wrong, I would never admit it.
  13. People say I am hard to get along with, but they are the ones who are hard to get along with.
  14. I believe there is always a crisis happening at work.
  15. For as long as I have worked here, there has always been a problem.
  16. Sometimes I have to make a scene for others to get my point.
  17. I take things personally; you would, too.
  18. No one ever does things the right way, like I would do them.
  19. I am always the one doing all the work.
  20. No one ever pays me any attention.

Early childhood program administrators often have a global impression that things are going well or not so well at their center, but they lack specific feedback on just what the different areas of the organization contribute to those impressions. This updated and expanded edition helps directors define more precisely how ten dimensions of a center shape the quality of work life for staff. It will help you look at your program in terms of collegiality, opportunities for professional growth, supervisor support, clarity, reward system, decision-making, goal consensus, task orientation, physical setting, and innovation. Written in an engaging and lively style, the ideas in this book will help you sharpen your leadership skills and make your center A Great Place to Work.

An Early Childhood Educator's role is to provide a healthy & safe environment where relationships with all in their work environment encompass warmth ,a sense of belonging and the children and their families feel valued. To be caring, honest ,respectful and maintain a professional manner... no where in one's job description does it make mention of a "bad attitude".In my role as an Early Childhood Educator my environment is one where children are learning through enjoyable interactions with other children and educator's.We are all equal partner's in the learning journey-because we co-operate,we trust and we respect each other.
