"Break it down by ethnicity, and the numbers are even more dismal: African American teens (ages 16 to 19) have a staggering unemployment rate of 41.7 percent, compared with 23.3 percent for white teens; young Latinos, 29.5 percent. In the next age bracket, ages 20 to 24, about 27 percent of African Americans are unemployed, more than twice the rate for their white peers (13.1 percent)."
The article went on to observe that young people could suffer the consequences deep into their individual and collective futures. "Lack of work experience now could mean lower salaries and harder won jobs down the line."

That is upsetting but parents do not help young adults become marketable. I run a daycare and in the state of SD you can be 14 to work there but the state does not allow the children to be left alone with the staff member even though they have the same training regimen the other staff do (CPR, First Aid, etc.) That means the younger staff have to be watched by the older staff members (18 OR OVER) and then you are not encouraged to hire younger teens for that reason. Also, if a teenager does not want certain hours in the summer or wants to take a break for a period of time or wants to work only on certain days and do not get their way - Mom or dad come to the rescue and if you live in a small community, you (the boss) are the bad guy. Interesting, isn't it?
