If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.
-Maya Angelou
I was reading an article on dealing with bossy coworkers and there, out of the blue, was this quote from Sophia Loren:
“Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid faith in yourself. That is why some people with mediocre talent, but with great inner drive, go so much further than people with vastly superior talent.”
So I got curious and googled for other words of wisdom from Loren (for Gen Xers, she is a famous Italian movie star) and here are some of my favorites:
“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”
"The two big advantages I had at birth were to have been born wise and to have been born in poverty."
"The facts of life are that a child who has seen war cannot be compared with a child who doesn't know what war is except from television."
"After all these years, I am still involved in the process of self-discovery. It's better to explore life and make mistakes than to play it safe. Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life."
Finally, since Loren is known for more than just her acting skills, I couldn't resist throwing in this one as well:
"A woman's dress should be like a barbed-wire fence: serving its purpose without obstructing the view."

The article in "ExchangeEveryDay" dated 12-24-09 on advice from Sophia Loren was interesting. The particular quotes dealing with being a part of war vs. seeing war on television and being born in poverty but having strong motivational tendencies vs. being born in an economically advanced family with mediocre tendencies hits home with teaching generations. The writer of the article was quick to use a wide variety of sources and provided valuable insight into the conflicts facing preschool teachers in today’s classrooms. The validity of entire piece was undermined with the last parting shot which showed the real crux of the matter that attracted the author‘s attention to Ms. Loren’s thoughts. Yes, Sophia Loren” is known for more than just her acting skills” and had the writer attempted to looks past the obvious, he/she would have seen a wise lady of import who has influenced many lives towards proper eating and diet as well as healthy life style. Please stick to the facts and pertinent information and don’t deviate into things “you cannot resist”. Readers are not interested in the writers’ personal preferences and leanings. We are trying to better ourselves through the exchange of information dealing with education and care of young children.

My first thought when I read the title of this article was to totally ignore it. Then I decided to read and glad I did. I knew about Sophia Loren from my youth. But I wanted to say is there is a lot to learn from our elders, from their life experiences. I love the quotes that were chosen, truly a breathe of fresh air in light of we here from today's generation. Truly having faith in yourself, bringing creativity into the lives of others, experiencing lack and having life experience, and self discovery have been key in my own life. The last quote was definitely awesome.
