I never wish to offend, but I am so foolishly shy, that I often seem negligent, when I am only kept back by my natural awkwardness…

The Foundation for Child Development in its
2009 Youth Well-Being Index Report projects that the well-being of children and families will decline in the coming year to its status in 1975 due to the impact of the recession. Thus, the report concludes, "the current recession will wipe out the gains, particularly since the late 1990's, of this 35 year period." The factors considered by the Foundation in making this projection are...
- the poverty rate for all families with children;
- children living in families with at least one parent with secure employment;
- median family income for all families with children; and
- the rate of children living in families with some form of health insurance.

I am reading this on the day before Thanksgiving and I am asking myself "what now can I be thankful for"? The response comes and I am humbled: I am thankful for the children for they don't give up on us even though the citizens of this great country continually fall short of meeting their needs for food, shelter, health and well-being. Please, God, watch out for our children during these difficult days and grant us a heart for the welfare of our youngest citizens. May we embrace the challenge of listening for their voices when we make difficult economic decisions. Never forget, our future depends on these little ones. If we choose to provide quality care and education, then we will look forward to a future filled with their possibilities.
