Rewarding Employees
January 7, 2009
The day the soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.
-Colin Powell
The very first issue of ExchangeEveryDay was sent out on November 20, 2000 to less than 300 subscribers. Eight years and 2,115 issues later, we now have over 50,000 subscribers around the world. Occasionally we will look back at some of the earlier messages that only 300 of you received that still may be relevant today. Here is one from Issue #2:

In an effort to decrease absenteeism, New York Life Insurance Company holds a lottery for employees who have been at work every day each quarter. In 1001 Ways to Reward Employees (New York: Workman Publishing, 1994) Bob Nelson reported that the first ten employees to have their names drawn earn a $200 bond; the next twenty earn a $100 bond; and seventy more receive a paid day off. A special lottery is held for employees with perfect attendance records for the entire year. The company estimates that this program has resulted in a 21% drop in absenteeism.

This brought back a lot of memories! We were one of the original subscribers and have those early issues archived with many other materials from our early years.
How things have changed!

Congratulations and keep those issues coming - we depend on them!

I am proud to say I was one of the lucky receipiants to receive this original issue in November 2000 and still have it! I have saved many issues over the years. I continue to realize the benefits of CCIE publications. THANKS!

I enjoyed this look back. Many years ago, I purchased the book "1001 ways to reward your employees" and found it very useful. The best advice it gave was to find out HOW your employees want to be rewarded. It was an eye opener for me to realize what I thought of as a great reward, some of my employees may not.

Fast forward to today and , I am happy to say, that we have teachers here who have been with us 35 years; a majority of them over ten. I like to think that they stay (obviously not for the pay) because we have continued to help them realize how important their work is, how much they are appreciated and that our reputation as a high quality child development center is the result of their high quality work!!
