The New Mommy Track
October 30, 2007
Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.
-Maya Angelou
Mothers want flexibility. That is the message of an article, "The New Mommy Track," by Kimberly Palmer (U.S. News and World Report, September 3, 2007; www.usnews.com). She observes...

"... a new generation of American mothers [is] rejecting the 'superwoman' image from the 1980s as well as the 'soccer mom' stereotype of the 1990s. Mothers today are more likely to negotiate flexible schedules at work and demand fuller participation of fathers in child raising than previous generations did, giving them more time to pursue their own careers and interests. Some so-called mompreneurs start their own businesses. Nearly 26 percent of working women with children under 18 work flexible schedules, according to the bureau of Labor Statistics, compared with 14 percent in 1991."

The article also observed that working mothers increasingly say part time work is their ideal work situation. In 2007, 60 percent of mothers made this claim as compared with 48 percent in 1997.

One of the best features of ExchangeEveryDay is the quote of the day. I have many of them pinned up on my bulletin board! But when in today's quote I read that "Play reaches the habits most needed, etc ...", I thought "That can't be right." And indeed, good ol' Bruno wrote that "Play teaches the habits most needed for intellectual growth," which makes much more sense. So many people read and rely on your daily article that you may want to make sure one more pair of eyes sees it before it goes out. Thank you for a wonderful few moments each day! Sincerely,
Andrea King
