As publishers, we have zillions of press releases that float by our desks. Every once in a while, one is so bizarre that it catches our eye. Just the other day we ran across a release that stated:
"Richochet Television is creating their next parenting phenomenon. Following the sensation of SUPERNANNY on ABC, the production company that created the show is now looking for America's next child care expert to host and star on a brand new television show. Casting producers are searching the country this spring to find a dynamic, caring, and credentialed person to carry this series due out this year. Are you a male nanny, a teacher, a doctor, a child psychologist, or another type of viable family specialist? If so, you could be the person chosen for this opportunity. Childcare experts and people with a background in family issue resolution who are interested in hosting the show should visit,
www.supernanny.com."
Now, neither Bonnie nor I have ever watched a single episode of Supernanny, but imagine it to be a pretty typical example of reality TV. On the other hand, we may be really wrong about this " it may be television and child development at its finest " and this may be the career advancement opportunity of your lifetime.
If you are content to stay in the known world of early childhood, there are still many non-TV star opportunities for you. In the
Job Opportunities section of our web site we have jobs for you to consider in Puerto Rico, New York, Alabama, California, Minnesota, Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, South Carolina, Washington, and Florida. Check out these openings at

I think the truth behind Supernanny lies somewhere between the two you indicated...typical reality TV and parenting at its finest. Yes, they seem to solve most problems in one episode. On the other hand, they introduce child development ideas that seem to be foreign to many parents these days, such as setting limits, holding children accountable, and raising our expectations for their behavior instead of accepting bad behavior just because they're children. I have heard parents say they were inspired to do things differently with their own children because of Supernanny, so it IS making a positive difference to some! I encourage you to check out just one episode, and make your own judgment!
