Education Week (January 4, 2007; www.edweek.org) has developed a "Chances-for-Success Index" to predict an individual's opportunity to achieve a successful life in their state. The index combines information from 13 individual indicators that span an individual's life from cradle to grave. A little ironic with this weeks events in Virginia... opportunities are only what you make of them or not as the case maybe. I would hope educators at both ends of the scale dont take these as 'self fulfilling prophecies'

Being from one of the low ranking states, I suspect that the results of this study are very dependent on the "starting point". The low performing states are probably low income/high minority population to start with.
