Giving and Receiving Through Art
February 6, 2007
Love will find a way. Indifference will find an excuse.
-Ukrainian proverb

Art 2 Heart is an "art sharing program" that crosses borders, ages, genders, religions, and socio-economic lines. The sole purpose of Art 2 Heart is to connect underprivileged children with someone else in the world who cares. Through Art 2 Heart, anyone can give a child around the globe something of their own, made just for them, and each child has a chance to give back.

Less than a year old, Art 2 Heart has already set up exchanges with children in orphanages in India and Eastern Europe. Through Art 2 Heart, a dialogue is created whereby penpals exchange art instead of words. All pictures are drawn on standard paper, 8.5 x 11 inches (or A4), for accessibility, ease in mailing, and continuity. No e-mail or computer images are accepted, as the goal is for the children to hold and touch a unique creation, just for them. Pictures need not be elaborate at all, and any kind of drawing, rubbing, painting, or collage works. The only requirement is that they include:

"To: (child’s name)," and "From: (partner’s name)" somewhere on the front. The first artwork submitted may include "To my new friend" in lieu of a name, until a match is made. Learn more details at www.art2heart.us, or by contacting Art2Heart, 559 Marin Ave., Mill Valley, CA 94941, USA.

I went to this website. The woman who started this program requested that the pictures be sent to her by 8/10/2006. She left for her trip on 8/15/2006. She has not written in her blog since the day she left.

I still think this is a wonderful idea and plan to share this with the children in the afterschool program I coordinate. I think the children will benefit from having a penpal that shares part of themselves with art. What a lovely way to get children to show compassion for one another.
