How to Boost Your Energy
September 19, 2006
Energy is the essence of life. Every day you decide how you're going to use it by knowing what you want and what it takes to reach that goal, and by maintaining focus.
-Oprah Winfrey

Aerobics authority Dr. Kenneth Cooper offered these strategies for boosting your energy in BottomLine Personal (September 1, 2005; www.BottomLineSecrets.com)...

  • Eat Less, but more frequently.  Consuming large meals makes you feel sluggish.  Instead, graze on small meals that contain a mix of carbohydrates and protein (but little fat) to provide a steady stream of fuel.
  • Exercise " at least 30 minutes of sustained activity five times a week.
  • Take a multivitamin.  In a clinical trial, people who took a multivitamim daily not only had improved immunity against infectious diseases but also had more energy.
  • Take naps.  Surveys show that most Americans don’t get as much sleep as they need.  Daily naps of 10 - 15 minutes are energizing.
  • Be social.  Studies show that isolation can lead to depression and early death.  We gain energy by being with others.
  • Explore your creativity.  Finding a creative activity that absorbs you is invigorating.  Developing your creativity also teach you new skills and challenges your brain.
  • Laugh.  Laughter appears to release endorphins just as creative pursuits do.  By improving your outlook, you’ll feel more energetic and ready to tackle life.
