Glenn Kleiman of the Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) has written a paper on increasing options through e-Learning as part of the U.S. Department of Education Secretary’s "No Child Left Behind" Leadership Summit. The paper, Meeting the Need for High Quality Teachers: e-Learning Solutions, begins with the assumption that high quality teachers are the most important factor in a child’s education, addresses the principles of effective professional development, and explores the potential of e-Learning for teacher education.
The "No Child Left Behind" legislation has increased the requirements for teacher qualifications to increase the pool of “highly qualified” teachers. The role of e-Learning in meeting the demand for better trained teachers and for ongoing professional development is explored by identifying examples of effective e-Learning programs for educators. The paper ends with a discussion of the principles of effective professional development and lessons learned about e-Learning for educators. The lessons learned about effective e-Learning have implications for eTeachers, instructional designers, and academic administrators.
