Evaluating the Quality of Online Courses
May 19, 2006
Progress always involves risk; you can't steal second base and keep your foot on first.
-Frederick Wilcox
Clayton Wright of Grant MacEwan College has developed a guide for evaluating online course quality based on the national and international experiences of the staff in the Instructional Media and Design Department. The guide was developed to assist educators in evaluating the effectiveness of online courses as well as a resource for course developers.

The evaluation criteria identify specific course components, qualities, or procedures proven to be helpful to online learners and/or instructors. The list provides a series of key questions and indicators related to topic headings:

  • Accessibility
  • Organization
  • Language
  • Layout
  • Goals and Objectives
  • Course Content
  • Instructional or Learning Strategies and Opportunities for Practice and Transfer
  • Learning Resources
  • Evaluation
  • Overall
